The IOS Spring Birding Weekend in Mt. Sterling, Illinois, faced rain, wind,
thunderstorms and a lot of high water. Wetland habitat was generally under three feet of muddy waters, rivers and streams were over their banks and some small roads were obstructed by floodwaters.
In spite of the less-than-ideal weather conditions the various field trips found over 125 species of birds including highlights such as Bewick's Wren, Black-necked Stilts, American Bittern, Cerulean Warbler and Chuck-will's-widow. All the trip reports have not been received yet, so the final report will be along in a couple of days.
Our thanks for a successful weekend go out first to all the very enthusiastic IOS members who made the weekend so much fun, and to the leaders and organizers: Bob Montgomery, who made all the arrangements, Dan Williams and Travis Mahan, field trip coordinators and leaders, and fieldtrip leaders Keith McMullen, Matt Fraker, Mike Ward, Tony Ward and Pat Ward. Everyone did a great job!
